Starting a home garden can evoke mixed emotions:
The excitement of imagining your own fresh harvests, and at the same time the nerves of being a beginner, of not knowing if you chose the right place or if the plants will grow as you expect.
You are not alone. Every gardener started right where you are now: with many questions, curiosity, and that deep desire to cultivate their own land again.
That's why at Caña Dulce Store we create planters designed to accompany you in that first step; made for the tropical climate of Costa Rica, durable, functional and with a design that integrates naturally into your space.
We want you to spend more time enjoying your garden and less time worrying about how to get started. This guide will take you step by step through assembling, preparing, and caring for your first garden box, so the growing experience is simple and meaningful.
1. CHECKLIST: MATERIALS AND TOOLS
Before you begin… Use this checklist as a starting point to organize the essentials and plan your garden calmly and clearly.
- Garden box Caña Dulce Store (choose size according to space)
- Good quality black soil + organic compost (available in our store)
- Natural coconut fiber as coverage
- Organic seeds or seedlings
- Gloves
- Small shovel and rake kit
- Screwdriver (Included in our boxes)
- Instruction manual (Included in our boxes)
2. LOCATION: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLACE
Observe your space first. Some questions you can ask yourself are:
- Where is there direct sunlight for at least 5 hours a day?
- In which areas does water accumulate the most or drainage is slowest? It's best to avoid them.
- What is the soil like? Is it uneven or compact? If so, we recommend placing the bed on blocks or a gravel base to improve drainage.
- Do I have easy access to water? Can I install a hose or irrigation system nearby?
- Is this an accessible area for maintaining a vegetable garden?
Answering these questions will help you get to know your space better and choose the ideal place adapted to your space.
3. STEP-BY-STEP ASSEMBLY
Once you've chosen the perfect spot, assembling your planter will be a breeze. Each garden box includes everything you need and a step-by-step manual to guide you.

4. MIXING AND PREPARATION OF THE SUBSTRATE
A well-prepared bed is key to healthy roots and bountiful harvests.
Recommended mix:
- 40% local black soil
- 40% mature organic compost
- 20% coconut fiber
Use this regenerative method and fill in layers.
-
- Drainage base layer: thin branches, pruning scraps, dried leaves, pieces of cardboard without ink or glue. For very rainy areas, you can add a thin layer of minerals such as clay, broken tiles, or pieces of ceramic.
- Soil + compost mixture.
- Top layer of coconut fiber (3-5 cm): protects roots, reduces weeds and retains moisture.
In dry tropical climates or coastal areas, this fiber layer is especially useful for mitigating evaporation.
5. SOWING, TRANSPLANT AND FIRST CARE.
Some important points are:
- Direct sowing: ideal for short-cycle vegetables: lettuce, radish, spinach, cilantro. Make shallow furrows (≈1 cm), place seeds and cover them gently.
- Transplanting: For larger seedlings (cherry tomatoes, peppers, eggplant). Leave space between plants (10-30 cm depending on the species).
- Watering: Water immediately after sowing or transplanting. Try to do this early in the morning or at dusk to avoid heat stress.
If you are in a rainy area, avoid excessively wetting the foliage to prevent fungal growth.

7. CONTINUOUS MAINTENANCE AND CARE
Your garden is almost ready, now all that's left is a little patience and maintenance!
- Water regularly: the key is to keep the soil moist, not waterlogged.
- Every 4-6 weeks add a light layer of compost or organic fertilizer.
- Replace the coconut fiber layer on the surface when it degrades.
- Rotate crops (by family) each season to avoid nutrient depletion and specific pests.
- Natural pest control: Use homemade extracts such as garlic or chili, or potassium soap.
- Attract pollinators: place native flowers such as zinnias, sunflowers or cosmos at the edge of the bed.
